President’s Message…………………

Greetings club members and Merry Christmas.  As I sit here it’s difficult to look back at this years fly fishing season without feeling that I was very fortunate this season.  I got to float several different rivers and caught some beautiful trout and even a couple nice steelies.  Without a doubt, the highlight of my season was spending a week on Ascension Bay on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.  Was I write this I am less than a month from a return visit and a week in a Palapa sounds like a wonderful remedy for a cold Idaho winter.  Whatever your plans, I hope you have some exciting fishing trips planned for 2007.  The club is considering a March fish-out on the Clarkfork next year, so we’ll be trout fishing again soon.  Be sure to look at our calendar of events, which will be posted in the January newsletter.

I’d like to welcome Matt VanVleet and Will Godfrey to our board of directors and thank Bill Lillibridge and Fred Smith for their service for the last several years.  Fred and Bill have both been huge contributors to the activities this club has enjoyed.  As a reminder to all of our members, please remember that everyone’s thoughts regarding club sponsored activities are welcome.  The board will be changing its regular meeting time from the 3rd Thursday of every month to the 3rd Tuesday of every month.  We meet at Rowdy’s for dinner at 6:00pm and anyone is welcome to attend and participate in our discussions.

I hope all of you will be able to attend our regular monthly club meeting this December.  This is our annual X-mass meeting and we encourage everyone to bring their significant other to share the holiday with us.  We’ll have decorations, small gifts and one very nice gift for one lucky club member in attendance.  I look forward to seeing everyone there in fine holiday spirit and remember we’ll be at the new Lewiston IDFG building.

Take care, safe travels and Merry Christmas…………….

KCF President, Zach Funkhouser

Giving Back To The Community

The members of the Kelly Creek Fly Casters are known to generously give of their time and talent to further the philosophy of fly fishing and to improve, where they can, the environment and the community.  There is now a new opportunity for the members of the club to “give back” to the community.  In keeping with KCFC policy, the Board of Directors has given their “blessing” to an important program that can really help a young person grasp a new life style anchor.

The State of Idaho Department of Juvenile Correction has three major facilities in the state.  One of those facilities is located in Lewiston.  There are thirty-six beds allocated to boys between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. During their stay at the Lewiston facility, the boys go to school and work in programs that help them to eventually reunite with society as decent citizens. One of the programs is outdoor oriented and those boys that have conducted themselves at a high level of behavior within the rules of the facility are allowed to participate.  A new addition to the outdoor program is fly fishing including casting and fly tying.

Beginning in February of 2007, volunteer members of our club will begin to teach fly fishing, fly casting and fly tying to selected boys from the Lewiston facility.  There will be six, two hour classes: introduction to fly fishing; two sessions of aquatic entomology and fly tying; two sessions of fly casting and a final trip to a body of water where the boys can use their learned skills to fly fish.  The first four classes will be held at the Lewiston facility, a high security unit. The last two classes will be held at waters edge, pond or lake, the location to be determined. The facility security staff will oversee our teaching in each class.

Each male or female volunteer will need to have a security clearance including finger printing.  Volunteers teaching at the facility will pass through metal detection devices and all rods, reels, lines, tools, hooks and the like will be counted in and out of the facility.  Transport of the boys for the last two classes will be provided by the facility security staff using their vehicles.

Will Godfrey, KCFC Board member, will head up the program and will work under the direction of the facility superintendent, Kevin Bernatz and his staff, including Terry Larsen, Unit Manager and Sandra Godfrey, Clinical Supervisor.  At the December KCFC meeting a request for volunteers will be made.  A volunteer crew of eight to ten members will be organized.  There will be a few preliminary orientation, regulation and planning meetings with the facility staff and the volunteers prior to the first class.

This is our opportunity to once again give to our community and to our State.  This is our opportunity to help teach a life skill to boys that have not had many good experiences in their lives.  This is our opportunity to positively influence a youth for the good.  Mr. Eric Barker from the Lewiston Tribune will follow the story in the newspaper from its beginning.  It will be our intent to express the success of our program to the Federation of FlyFishers and Trout Unlimited.  I hope you will strongly consider being a volunteer in this program.
