PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Saker Medevarapu - Kelly Creek Flycasters President

Greetings Folks!

Summer time is here, let the fishing begin!  Although I have not been out a lot this spring, I found a neat little Brooke Trout stream close to home.  It is exactly the type of water that I learned how to fly fish on!  Although the fish are not much over 6” there are the occasional 10-12” fish that keep things interesting.  It’s the perfect creek to fish small cane rods on!  I have plans to fish Georgetown Lake, the Elk River, Clark Fork, the St. Regis, and perhaps the Wigwam (although all the Bears out there do little to excite me) this summer.

In a few weeks we have our club picnic at Chief Timothy.  Please plan to RSVP your attendance at the club meeting so I can get a head count for food.  As always, please bring a potluck item for lunch.  After (or before) eating, you may wish to bring you fishing gear as the plan is to try to catch some HUGE carp out there, or perhaps some bass if you prefer.  Next month Zach will be hosting the Lochsa fish out, generally we stay at Wendover when we go.  August is the Kelly Creek fishout but we do not have a trip host that has volunteered yet.  If there are no volunteers at the next meeting the Kelly Creek fish out may become a non hosted event.

The board has also decided to purchase more of the raffle tickets to support the FFF.  The grand prize is a trip for two to Cinco Rios Lodge in Chile. The first place prizes include 4 days guided fishing, 5 nights lodging for 2 people at Five Rivers Lodge in Dillon, MT, including travel (an estimated value of $6300). Two additional trips will be drawn during the conclave. There are also second place prizes including hats, shirts, rods, reels, and other gear. These club purchased raffle tickets will be available to you in the raffle this month.  If you should win or choose to purchase some just remember that you will have to mail in your raffle tickets SOON as the drawing is in on June 20th.  Please remember that quality tied flies or other delicious baked goods are greatly appreciated in the raffle so bring something to donate.

See you at the meeting!

Saker

Kelly Creek Flycasters MAY Program

Thursday, June 11h at 7:00 PM

China Inn, Lewiston ID

Program:  Video

When was the last time you saw a grown man sprinting down an empty beach in Mexico, waving a 9 foot fly rod, while in hot pursuit of a fish resembling Elizabeth Hurley? Join us as we explore the arcane pursuit of fly-fishing for Rooster fish from the beaches of Baja Sur, Mexico and the zealotry and commitment that it takes to successfully angle to them.  We will be showing a short film about the almost insane hunt for massive roosterfish in the surf and on the fly. Its high energy, combined with the highs and lows of the struggle to tame a very elusive and beautiful fish caused a standing room only crowd at the awards show to give much more than the usual cursory ooo's and ahhh's. The film won the contest and it was definitely a film that both young and old could get excited about.

TYING CORNER – Shrimp

By Bob Bates, FFF Clubwire

Comments:

There are many food sources for fish that swim from fresh water to the salt.  About three years ago Scott Kinney, Eugene, OR started fishing for steelhead with flies that were tied to represent shrimp.  In Oregon there are 60 some varieties of shrimp (300 species worldwide).  Scott tied this pattern at the 2008 Northwest Fly Tier Expo in Albany, OR.  As he tied it, many pictures of shrimp species were shown on his computer.  He fishes bays, estuaries and fresh water for steelhead, coho, Chinook, sea run cuts and other fish that might be interested in his shrimp pattern.  It works quite well for him.

Fish probably start feeding on shrimp in the bays and estuaries before they head out to sea.  At sea there are many more opportunities to feed on nourishing shrimp.  So Scott feels he is offering the returning fish something to remind them of home.

Materials & Equipment:

Hook:  For this tie he used a Daiichi hook, size 6, but he uses many other hooks and sizes
     Thread:  Red 6/0
     Antenna*:  Crystal flash, pinkish
Legs and other front portions of shrimp:  Marabou, fleshy pink
Weight:  Lead eyes (Additional lead wire optional)
Shellback:  Magic shrimp foil, 1/8th inch wide
     Rib:  Ultra wire red brassy

Body:  Medium Krystal hackle shrimp, pink

* Apparently the shrimp don’t have a real antenna, but many drawings show long fine appendages

Step 1: Tipping the hook downward makes attaching the lead eyes easier.  Attach thread at rear of hook and for this hook size attach four 2-inch pieces of Crystal Flash.

Step 2: Attach pink marabou to simulate legs over bend of hook

Step 3: Attach lead eyes roughly over point of hook. Use little black eyes on the smaller patterns.  Always keep the size of eyes proportional to hook size.

Step 4: Tie on shellback Magic shrimp foil and red Ultra wire behind the eyes.  Also, rotate hook in vise to level the shank

Step 5: Sometimes Scott adds lead wire all the way to the hook eye for extra weight.  Occasionally he will even put on two layers of lead.  Do it before tying on the Krystal hackle.  Tie in medium Krystal hackle behind the lead eyes, and wind thread forward to about one eye width behind the hook’s eye.

Step 6: Put two wraps of Krystal hackle behind the lead eyes while stroking the fibers back to prevent winding them down.  Wrap Krystal hackle around one lead eye, pass it to other side of hook, once around the other lead eye then wrap in front of the lead eyes. This gives full body at back of hook.  Now start wrapping forward while stroking the fibers back.  Secure behind the eye, and trim excess.

Step 7: Trim top fibers about even with the lead eyes and tapering to the front.

Step 8: Pull shellback forward.

Step 9: Secure the shellback with a couple of thread wraps.  Wrap the wire forward, can be counter wrapped or not.  The first wrap is over the shellback behind the eyes, then under the eyes to just in front of the eyes.  Spiral wire forward to hook eye, secure under the shellback, and trim wire with old scissors.  Trim shellback a little more than two eye widths ahead of tie down point

Step 10: Hold up shellback and wind thread over wire to cover it for small head.  Pick out sides a little then trim sides and front of body a little.  Concentrate on tapering down the Krystal hackle toward the tail of the shrimp (eye of the hook).  Apply a little head cement on the thread winds under the shellback.

Closing Comments: There are also some bigger shrimp to imitate so Scott ties some flies up to size 1/0. These flies usually have extra weight.  Please be careful when you cast one of these heavily weighted flies.  It hurts when one hits you in the back of the head.
