President’s Message………………….
Wow, what a busy a busy summer, it’s hard to believe it’s already September. September is always one the best months of the year, some of the big steelhead finally starting to show themselves and NFL football begins. How can you beat landing a B-run and still being home in time for the start of Monday Night Football. Life is good!!
The KCF’s have had a good year. Our July Lochsa fish-out was attended by about 30 people. Fishing was good, the clean-up went well and a fun time was had by all. In August, our Kelly Creek fish-out had about 16 people show up. Bill Lillibridge cooked steak, salmon and halibut for dinner. Fishing was okay, but dinner was great. The highlight may have been the 3 bears that visited the KF campground at about 2 in the afternoon on Saturday. They trashed a camp and really stirred things up for about a half hour.
While we’re on the subject of fish-outs, if you haven’t been to Rock Creek, make sure to attend that fish-out, scheduled for Sept 29, 30 and Oct 1. The creek will be fishing wonderfully by then and the camping is great. If you plan to attend that event, or if you’d just like more information about the trip, contact Bruce Young at 746-7079.
The KCFs just finished up our 2006 Women’s Fly Fishing Clinic. We had a very good turn-out and made lots of new friends. We started with 21 students and took most of them fishing for the weekend. From the sounds of it, everyone had pretty good fishing and Bob Clark’s dutch oven cooking was, as always, spectacular. I’d like to give a special thanks to Bob and Rob Clark, Jerry Cebula, Craig Lannigan, Saker Medevarepu, Mark Lamb, Troy Robbins, Fred Trevey, Will Godfrey, Mike Selivanoff and Bill Lillibridge for their time. Without the help of our club members, that class is not possible.
Remember the note at the top of the page about the club changing its meeting location. We’re looking forward to trying out Antonio’s and we look forward to seeing a new menu. We’ll be meeting in the back room. Be sure to come to the meeting and support the club in this decision to try a new meeting place. We think it will be a good one.
Take care and I look forward to seeing everyone at our regular monthly club meeting this Thursday night.
Catch you on the fly…………

A Day at Amber Lake
It was May 13th and the first Kelly Creek Fly Casters fish-out of the year. We joined the Clearwater Fly Casters of Pullman, WA at Amber Lake in Washington. We had six club members attending. It was a beautiful day – sunny and warm. The perfect fishing weather for me, a fair weather fisher, but not too good catching weather I was told. It had been years since I’d fished a lake in a float tube and in the past I had hooked many fish while fishing this way, but I was never able to land one. I couldn’t seem to reach far enough to hold my rod up high enough to get the fish out of the water to where I could reach it. This time I had a new 4 WT rod that was a little easier to handle. I had borrowed the tube and flippers from Bob Clark and it was awkward backing into the water with the flippers on to get out into the lake. The water felt cold through my waders, but I adjusted to it soon enough. Looking around the lake, it was spotted with fishers in all kinds of pontoon boats, pontoon float tubes, rafts and hard sided boats. The water looked clean and the lake was quiet. Saker gave me some pointers for lake fishing and guided me over to the opposite side of the lake to fish along the shoreline. I was kicking as hard as I could to get over there and it felt like it took me ages. Finally, I made it across the lake and began to fish. Saker headed towards the other end of the lake. I enjoyed the peaceful setting and fished.
The morning was quiet and I didn’t have any bites on the flies that I was using. However, it was fun to hear the others catching fish. One fisherman had his dog with him in his boat. Every time the fisherman had a fish on his line, the dog barked until it was landed and released. By listening to the dog, it was easy to count how many fish he was catching. We had a great lunch provided by the Clearwater Fly Casters and I enjoyed meeting several of their members. There were a couple of women members there and I made some new fishing friends that I can call on.
After lunch we went back into the lake and that was when I landed my first fish in a float tube! I was fishing near the reeds along the bank and suddenly I felt a fish take the fly. I don’t catch too many fish, so I was pretty surprised and excited! The fish felt really big and fought well. I was hoping that I wouldn’t lose it. Then I got it up to where I could see it. It was a monster fish! I tried to get it in my net, but the net was too small for it! I was beginning to worry that I was tiring out the fish too much and I gave up on the net and tried to hold the fish so I could take the fly out of its mouth. It was such a beautiful rainbow trout that I just loved to look at it. When I got it to my tube and out of the water, it measured 19” on the skirt of the tube. I got the fly loose while it was wiggling and tried to slowly release it back into the lake. But it was really slippery and slipped out of my hands. I watched it – hoping it wasn’t too tired or hurt – hoping it would swim quickly away. I felt so relieved and happy to see it swim back into the depths of the lake! I couldn’t believe I’d caught and landed a fish that size! It was a first for me and a great memory.
I’m looking forward to going back to Amber Lake again next spring. Everyone caught fish on this trip. I was probably the only person who caught just one fish, but I was happy with my catch of the day! Now I have my own pontoon float tube – all I need are flippers and I’m all set! I hope we’ll have an even better turnout of KCF members next year!

Kelly Creek Flycasters Regular Monthly Meeting
Thursday, September 14th at 6:00PM
Antonio’s Restaurant, Main Street Lewiston
Program: Fly Fishing on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula with Bill Marts
This program is about fishing for wild trout on Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. This is the last great stronghold of wild trout on Earth. There are more than a thousand rivers here and less than 3 dozen have been explored by sport fisherman. It is possible that the best is yet to be discovered! This is wild country inhabited by relatively few people, herds of reindeer, the world’s most massive moose and the largest concentration of brown bears on earth. The program will give you a glimpse of the most productive rivers fished ……so far.
