President’s Message………………….

Greetings flycasters, how has the fishing been?  I got a nice fish on the Snake a couple days ago but so far my season has been fairly slow.  That’s okay, I’ve spent some quality time with some good friends on the river this year, so I’ve got no complaints.  The highlight of my season so far has been an evening of good bomber fishing on the Ronde.  Taking a steelhead on a dry fly is about as good as it gets.

This is going to be a busy fall and the KCF have a lot of things beginning to happen.  Please be sure to come to the November meeting so you can have a voice in some of our changes.  First off, we’ll be holding elections for the board of directors.  We’ve got two openings and we’d love to have some new faces involved.  If you’d like to be a board member and influence the direction the club is moving in then please give it some thought and come to the meeting prepared to volunteer.  The board will also be bringing a proposal forward to raise our yearly dues.  With the rising cost off all of our expenses we’ll be forced to choose between club provided services or a small increase in dues.  Our proposal is to raise dues $10 a year.  We’ll be discussing this at the next meeting and handing out a ballot for our members to vote on the issue.  We intend to make the decision base on a majority rule.  Your opinion on the issue is important to us so be sure to come to the meeting and be a part it.

Another priority for us is to sell the remaining tickets for Bob Clark’s bamboo rod.  If you have not purchased any tickets yet but intend to, please consider picking them up at the November meeting.  We would really love to raffle the rod at our December X-mass meeting..  What a wonderful present a new bamboo rod would make.

Lastly, after over five years creating and editing the club newsletter, I have decided to hang it up.  That means that the club will be looking for a new editor.  Yes, it is a moderate amount of work, but it can also be fun and it’s a great way to get involved with the club.  We may have a few volunteers for this duty already, but if you are interested please let me know.

That about covers everything we’ll be addressing at the November meeting.  I hope your steelhead season has started to pick up.  I know there are more than a few B-Runs cruising through the Clearwater.  If you want to take one with the floating line you better get out there, the sink-tip season will be approaching fast with these temperatures.  Good luck and bring a fish story to our meeting next week.

Catch you on the fly…………….

A TRIP TO REMEMBER
Last July, with weather getting hot, Harry and I decided to make a trip to the 7 Devils.  We contacted Norm Riddle, who runs the Snake River every week, to pick us up on Thursday at the Granite Creek rapids.  We had Jerry Wilson, at Hillcrest Aircraft take us by helicopter to the big ridge between Mirror Lake and Big Sheep Lake.  This was the Saturday before our pick-up.  As we sat down on the ridge and unloaded our gear we could look down at Mirror Lake and see fish surfacing.  We hadn’t planned on fishing Mirror but it looked like a prime time to get down there.  We made our way down a shale slide and the fishing was super.  We used small dry flies, 18s & 20s.  Anything with grey hackle worked well.  After catching several 16 to 19 inch cutts we each kept a fish for supper and made our way to the top of the ridge where we spent the first night.

Sunday we went around the ridge and dropped down to Big Sheep Lake.  The fishing that day wasn’t very good, we caught 3 fish all day, just enough for supper.  The next day was Monday and we hiked over the next ridge and dropped down into Shelf, Gem and Basin Lakes.  We caught lots of fish, Rainbow and Cutts, but not as large.  The mosquitoes were bad.  We made our way back to Sheep Lake and camped Monday night.  Tuesday we got up and fished Sheep Lake again and fishing was fantastic.  We caught lots of Cutts, some 20 inches.  We almost got tired of catching fish.

Wednesday we fished a while and packed up our gear to head down the long ridge to the Snake River.  We spent Wednesday night on the river.  I didn’t know the river fished so well.  We caught lots of Rainbow trout and it was  nice to be fishing in moving water again.  Thursday morning we had breakfast and fished a short time.  Around noon our ride home pulled up to the beach.  We sat back and enjoyed the beautiful ride home.  I can’t wait to do it again.

Kelly Creek Flycasters Regular Monthly Meeting

Thursday, November 9th at 6:00PM

Antonio’s Restaurant, Main Street Lewiston

Program:  Fly Fishing the Skeena River Tributaries

The Skeena River and its world famous tributaries are known as the Sistine Chapels of the steelhead haunts around the world. I have had the fortunate pleasure to have been able to fish many of these rivers repeatedly over the last 30 years.  Join me and my Canadian fishing partner, Bob Hooton, for a pictorial essay on the Babine and Bulkley Rivers during September when the fish are bright, and conditions permit dry lines and skating flies. The Skeena River country is not only a fishing adventure of a life time, but it also offers some of the most profound scenery in North America. I always have a tough choice when I travel to the Northern end of the BC Province, as to whether I should have the rod in my hand or the camera!
