President’s Message………………….

So how has your steelhead season been so far?  Most reports indicate that the fishing has been slow but I hope that hasn’t stopped you from getting out on the river.  The aluminum hatch is only a week away now, so there’s not time left to enjoy the peaceful season.  I suggest we all get out on the river sometime soon to enjoy it.

Speaking of steelhead fishing, Ginny Foote is organizing our steelhead fish-out on the Salmon River next weekend, October 14th and 15th.  We’re planning to meet at the Skookumchuck Recreation site on U.S. 95 at milepost 220. Ginny will be there on Friday night.  This is our last fish-out of the season so let’s have a good turn out and enjoy some steelhead fishing together.  She’ll be cooking a late lunch/early dinner for everyone on Saturday.  Please RSVP with Ginny at 751-1750 to let her know if you will be attending.

The Red Shed fly shop also held it’s Clearwater Spey Clave last month.  I saw several club members there and had an enjoyable time casting all the Echo spey rods with Craig Lannigan.  It was a fun event and Mike really works hard to put it on and appreciates all the support he gets from the KCF’s.

Take care and I hope to see you on the river real soon…………

KCF President, Zach Funkhouser

SHARP TAILS AND FINS

I usually go to Montana the latter part of September for my last fling at
fly fishing before getting ready for hunting season and fly tying when those
seasons close. This year instead of going to the Big Hole I met some friends
in Northern Montana to do some fishing and bird hunting. The results were
better than expected. The drive north was rainy and windy for most of the
way. The days we were there to hunt and fish were sunny and warm. We really
lucked out this year!

In the mornings and evenings we would bird hunt and during the warmer part
of the day, dedicate it to fishing. Pheasants weren't open yet, although
there were plenty around, so we concentrated on Huns, Sharp Tails and
Prairie Chickens. We managed to get the first two but none of the latter.

The fishing was done on ponds on private ranches we have access to and on
the Sun, Marias and Teton Rivers which were surprisingly clear considering
the weather the previous days. Access was on private land and we didn't have
a problem getting permission from the land owners. The real Montanan's are
great people.

The next weekend was the Rock Creek fishout. When all was said and done, the
only ones who attended were Ron Aldrich and myself. We arrived Friday just
after noon and the lower portion of the creek was filled with residents at
each turnout. We set up camp at Harry's Flat campground as the further we
went up stream, the skinnier the water got. We fished down stream from camp
that afternoon. The next morning we fished up stream at the Micro burst till
noon just to see what it was like. I got three and Ron caught five. After
lunch, we fished down stream hitting the pocket water and holes. You had to
work for them but we did catch Cuts and Browns. I had a hit on a dry fly but
the real "catching" was done with nymphs. Sunday we left the n the Lochsa was
as good or better than Rock Creek. Although there were some October Caddis
out, most were again caught on nymphs.

All in all, spending seven days over two weekends in Montana made for a
memorable end to this years fly fishing.
